Masal Vadai

Masal Vadai is a very popular South Indian snack. It is usually prepared by soaking Dhal in Water and then grinding it to a coarse paste. The Dhal is then seasoned with South Indian spices, Onion, Green Chilli and Curry leaves. Then prepared mixture is then made into small dumplings and deep fried in Oil.

Bengal Gram Dhal – 2 cup, soaked in Water with 2 Dry Red Chilli for at least 3 hours and drained
Fennel Seeds - 1 tsp
Onion – 1, diced
Green Chillies – 4, diced
Ginger – 1 tsp, grated
Curry leaves
Turmeric - 1 tsp
Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Asafetida - 1 tsp
Salt
Oil
Take a handful of the soaked Dhal and transfer to a large bowl. Grind the remaining Dhal along with Fennel seeds to a coarse paste with out adding any Water. Add this coarse mixture to the reserved Dhal along with Onion, Green Chilli, Ginger, Curry Leaves, Turmeric, Asafetida, Chilli powder and required Salt. Make Lemon sized balls with this mixture and gently press it in between your palms. Drop the prepared Vadai's in hot Oil and deep fry until golden brown.
Add 1 cup of chopped Vazhai Poo to the mixture to make scrumptious Vazhai Poo Vadai.
Substitute Channa dhal with Green Gram to make Green Gram Vadai.
